What is Daylight Saving Time?
Daylight Saving Time refers to the process of changing clocks by an hour to reflect the change of daylight hours as we move through summer and winter seasons. Clock change happens twice a year and requires moving our clocks one hour forward or back, depending on the season. Every spring, clocks "spring forward" by an hour forward to benefit the earlier rise and late setting of the sun in the summer months giving us longer days, and then clocks "fall back" every fall to allow for the shorter days.
When Did Daylight Saving Time Start?
The first recorded proposal for the rules of Daylight Saving Time was made by Benjamin Franklin, publisher of the famous proverb "early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise". According to his notes, Franklin anonymously published a letter in the Journal de Paris with the suggestion that Parisians could save on their use of candles by rising earlier to use natural morning daylight.
Benjamin Franklin’s quote is cited as the earliest known record of the idea for Daylight Saving Time, with many other suggestions and petitions following to encourage the use of a system that would help to maximize on daylight hours, gaining momentum around 1900. Despite many recommendations, the practice of changing clock hours was not widely adopted until 1916 during the First World War, when it was recognized that this would be more economical and would help to save on coal and power in wartime. Germany was first to execute Daylight Saving Time change in 1916, with England and the remainder of Europe following suit, then the USA.
